This is made of rice flour, colored with syrups; boiled in a pot and let to cool down before serving.

Roti‘ is Indonesian for ‘bread’, originally. Then it got stretched to encompass every flour-and-egg-and-butter edibles (which to us are ‘Western’) which are baked in ovens (which are to us ‘Western’, too). Read more »

Javanese and Indonesian Snack

In Javanese, ‘snack’ is ‘nyamikan‘ (‘something eaten when idle’). In Indonesian, it is ‘cemilan‘ (‘small food’), ‘kudapan‘(to be eaten between meals’), or ‘jajanan‘ (‘something bought’).

There are thousands of varieties of Indonesian snacks, and hundreds of the Javanese; so I’ll keep on adding new entries in this particular section of the site.

Note#1.
The Javanese ‘DH’ has been written as just ‘D’ as Indonesian names, for instance ‘Dhimas’ (‘little brother’) becomes ‘Dimas’.

Javanese Names [part 1]

In Javanese, ‘name’ is ‘jênêng‘. In Indonesian, it is ‘nama‘. If plural, the word is repeated, sewn together with a dash.

All Javanese and Indonesian ‘i’ is pronounced as in ‘Italy’.

The ‘R’ is pronounced as it is in Italian.

All the ‘D’ in every word of Indonesian language is pronounced hard, i.e. just like the English ‘D’.
